A team from the Election Commission of India, led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, has arrived in Assam to assess the state’s preparedness for the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. The visit aims to review logistical arrangements, strengthen coordination with the state administration, and ensure a smooth electoral process.
The team, including Election Commissioners S.S. Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, will engage with senior officials from various departments to discuss voter list revision, security deployment, polling infrastructure, and electoral reforms. Special attention will be given to sensitive and vulnerable polling areas, especially in flood-prone and border regions.
Meetings with national and state political parties are scheduled to address concerns and promote a level playing field for all stakeholders. Discussions will also cover training of polling personnel, availability of electronic voting machines (EVMs), and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) devices.
The 2026 Assam Assembly elections are anticipated to be highly competitive, underscoring the significance of the Commission’s early review. The ECI’s interactions with officials and parties are crucial to ensuring adherence to the Model Code of Conduct once the election dates are announced. The visit will conclude with a final review meeting later this week.
