All preparations have been finalized for the upcoming elections for the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) scheduled for Tuesday, as confirmed by officials. Over 2.39 lakh voters, with 1.26 lakh being women, are anticipated to determine the fate of 68 candidates, including 28 women, vying for positions in the civic body polls. A public holiday has been announced by the Mizoram government in AMC areas on the election day to facilitate voter participation.
The Mizoram State Election Commission (SEC) has reported that almost 94% of senior citizens, Persons with Disabilities (PwD), and individuals with chronic illnesses have already utilized the home voting facility. Notably, 40 men and 28 women from four major political parties are competing for seats in the civic body, with the ruling Zoram People’s Movement, main Opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), Congress, and BJP fielding candidates.
In the previous AMC elections held in February 2021, MNF emerged victorious by securing 11 seats, while Zoram People’s Movement and Congress won six and two seats, respectively. Despite the term of the municipality ending on March 1, the election process was postponed by the State Election Commission due to administrative factors, including the state Assembly’s budget session and ongoing board examinations. The Model Code of Conduct has been enforced, effective from March 18 until the election process concludes on April 30.
Votes cast will be counted on April 27, as per an official notification, with restrictions in place on recruitment or appointment processes in government departments, Public Sector Undertakings, or corporations within the Aizawl Municipality without prior approval from the State Election Commission, except for cases managed by the State Public Service Commission.
