Two-time champion Elina Svitolina secured a spot in the Italian Open final by defeating three-time winner Iga Swiatek in a thrilling semifinal match. Svitolina, who is aiming for her first WTA 1000 title of the season, will now face Coco Gauff in the final. This marks Svitolina’s third final appearance at the Italian Open.
Svitolina expressed her joy at returning to the final after several years, following her victory over Swiatek in a 2-hour and 14-minute match. She emphasized the incredible feeling of achieving this feat in such a remarkable manner. Svitolina’s exceptional performance included saving 11 out of 16 break points in the semifinal, with a flawless record of saving all five break points in the final set.
Having triumphed over Swiatek twice this year, Svitolina holds a 3-2 win-loss record against Gauff. The age gap between Svitolina and Gauff, which is 9 years and 182 days, sets the stage for an intriguing final matchup. This age difference is the most significant in an Internazionali d’Italia final since 1990, as per WTA records.
Coco Gauff, on the other hand, has made history by becoming the youngest American since Venus Williams in 1998-99 to reach consecutive Italian Open finals. Gauff’s achievement also includes being the first player since Swiatek in 2021-22 to secure back-to-back Rome final appearances.
