The Embassy of India in Muscat has verified the successful rescue of 24 Indian seafarers from MT Marivex following a fire incident near the Strait of Hormuz. Grateful for the prompt action, the embassy expressed thanks to the Omani authorities for their swift response in ensuring the safety of the crew members. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) disclosed that the fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. on Monday during an inter-ministerial briefing.
Opesh Kumar Sharma, Director of the Shipping Division, mentioned that the possibility of the ship being struck by a projectile is still under investigation. He stated that the fire incident occurred at 1:30 p.m. and efforts are ongoing to confirm the details in coordination with the ship owners, Ministry of External Affairs, and the Indian mission in Oman. The Shipping Ministry is collaborating with various entities including the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Indian missions abroad, the Indian Navy, and the Ministry of Defence to safeguard the seafarers’ well-being.
The vessel, which was empty of cargo and in ballast condition, was located far from the Strait of Hormuz and directed southwards. The Embassy of India in Muscat, through a social media post, acknowledged the incident involving Indian sailors and assured that they are liaising with Omani authorities for the rescue and protection of the crew.
