The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is gearing up to attach the residence of former Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas in Kandi, West Bengal’s Murshidabad district. Shantanu, who was arrested by the ED in connection with a criminal-linked syndicate case, saw ED officials breaking open the locks of his residence in Kandi on Friday. The search operation yielded around two kilograms of gold, along with a significant amount of cash, mobile phones, and property-related documents.
Shantanu, a former Officer-in-Charge of Kalighat Police Station, hails from Kandi and resides in Ward No. 8 under Kandi Municipality. The ED officials, after waiting outside for nearly two-and-a-half hours, conducted an extensive search operation at his residence. Local sources mentioned the transformation of Shantanu’s dilapidated main residence in Kandi into a “palatial” structure over the past few years.
Shantanu’s sister, Gouri Sinha Biswas, holds the position of Vice-Chairperson of the Trinamool Congress-led Kandi Municipality. Following Shantanu’s arrest, his residence in Kandi became a subject of public interest. The ED is now in the process of preparing to seize the property, with officials examining relevant documents and questioning Shantanu’s family members.
In addition to the searches at Shantanu’s residence, the ED also conducted operations at three locations in Kolkata related to the Sona Pappu case. These searches included the residence of a Sub-Inspector of Kolkata Police in Kasba, the house of businessman Atul Kataria in Chakraberia, and Royd Street in central Kolkata. The operations resulted in the seizure of nearly two kilograms of gold and Rs 10 lakh in cash. The ED is working on retrieving deleted data from mobile phones recovered during the searches.
