England captain Harry Brook acknowledged his team’s middle-order collapse as decisive in their six-wicket loss to India in the opening ODI at Edgbaston. Despite a fighting partnership between Joe Root and Liam Dawson, England slumped from 61 without loss to 80/5, eventually setting a target of 258.
India successfully chased down the target in 45.2 overs, with Shubman Gill’s 80 and an unbroken 102-run partnership between Axar Patel and Washington Sundar sealing victory. Brook noted the pitch became easier to bat on in the second innings, contributing to India’s successful chase.
Looking ahead, Brook emphasized England’s focus on building towards the 2027 ODI World Cup and improving in the ongoing series. He welcomed all-rounder Brydon Carse back to the squad, highlighting his aggression and balance as valuable additions for the remaining two ODIs.
The second ODI of the series is set for Cardiff, where England aims to level the contest following India’s strong performance at Edgbaston.
