England captain Harry Brook recognized that his team has not yet reached their peak performance level, even though they secured a spot in the Super 8s by defeating Italy in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Group C match at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. Brook expressed contentment with the qualification, stating, “We haven’t played our best cricket, but at the end of the day, we’ve made it through, and we’re heading to the next round, so we can be happy about that.”
In the match, England posted 202/7 with Will Jacks playing a crucial role by scoring a composed half-century. Despite this, Brook admitted that England’s batting display has lacked consistency throughout the group stage. He acknowledged this trend, saying, “We haven’t managed to string along the scores that we’d like to do as a batting unit, but that’s part of T20 cricket.”
Brook emphasized the unpredictability of T20 cricket and stressed the importance of maintaining intent. He highlighted the need for bravery in decision-making, stating, “It’s a fickle game. One day you can smack a hundred, and the next day you can get out first ball. We’ve just got to keep on being brave and taking our options up.”
England faced a challenging Italy chase, testing their bowlers, but Brook praised his team’s composure and fielding standards for securing the win. He particularly commended Sam Curran for his crucial breakthroughs during the death overs. Brook also discussed strategic decisions, including using Jofra Archer aggressively during the Power-play to gain early momentum.
Looking ahead, Brook emphasized the importance of adapting quickly and enhancing England’s batting intent for the upcoming matches. He stressed the need for a more fearless approach with the bat and expressed hope that England would peak at the right time in the tournament. Brook concluded by stating, “You’ve only got 20 overs to bat, and you’ve got to try and get as many runs as possible. And that’s probably been our little downfall in this group stage so far, is that we haven’t quite been brave enough and taken our options as much as we felt.”
