Enthusiasm and celebration filled Gangtok as Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in Sikkim’s statehood anniversary closing ceremony. Thousands of people gathered to catch a glimpse of the leader, making it a historic moment for many. The capital city’s streets were crowded from early morning, showcasing the excitement surrounding the Prime Minister’s visit.
Residents from all over Sikkim, including remote areas, traveled long distances to be part of the occasion. The roadshow turned into a massive public gathering with cheers, music, and festivities. Bikash Basnet, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister of Sikkim, described the turnout and public enthusiasm as unprecedented. He mentioned that people from far-flung areas of Sikkim came together in Gangtok, filling every corner of the city with excitement.
The Prime Minister’s visit coincided with celebrations for the state’s golden jubilee year, adding significance to the event. Kunzang Gyatso, President of the Sikkim Sports Climbing Association and an Everest climber, expressed delight at the visit inspiring the younger generation. He thanked Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang for inviting the Prime Minister for the golden jubilee celebrations. Residents considered the visit a moment of pride for the small Himalayan state.
Former Army personnel Subedar Ranjit Khaling shared his excitement, stating that seeing the Prime Minister in their small state was a proud moment that words couldn’t describe. Post the roadshow, the celebratory mood continued in Gangtok, with people dancing, singing, and strolling through the streets in groups. The city transformed into a carnival-like atmosphere, with locals and visitors alike sharing in the festive spirit.
