The European Union (EU) has stated its intention to safeguard its interests if the United States takes actions that contradict the trade agreement signed by both parties last year. In response to President Trump’s warning of increasing tariffs on EU-imported cars and trucks, the EU emphasized its commitment to a mutually beneficial transatlantic relationship. The EU spokesperson mentioned that the bloc is implementing its commitments under the trade deal while maintaining communication with US counterparts.
Trump’s recent tariff threat on EU automotive imports stems from his claim that the EU has not upheld its end of the trade agreement. The EU, however, asserts that it is fulfilling its obligations as per standard legislative procedures and is in constant dialogue with the US administration. The EU-US trade deal, established in the previous year, involved the suspension of tariffs on US industrial products by the EU and the introduction of tariff-rate quotas for various US agri-food products entering the EU market.
The US administration’s decision to raise tariffs on European cars and trucks to 25 percent has sparked tensions between the two economic powers. Trump justified the tariff increase by alleging the EU’s non-compliance with the trade agreement, aiming to incentivize manufacturers to relocate production facilities to the US. The move is part of a broader strategy to attract foreign investments in the automotive sector within the United States.
