An exposition showcasing the Holy Relics of the Buddha’s chief disciples, Arahant Sariputta and Arahant Mahamoggallana, is set to take place at the Ganden Monastery in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from June 1-10. This event is being organized by India’s Ministry of Culture, the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), and New Delhi’s National Museum. The relics of these revered disciples will be on display for visitors to witness and pay their respects.
In a significant move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced during Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa’s State Visit to India in October 2025, the upcoming Holy Relics Exposition of Arahant Sariputta and Arahant Mahamoggallana in Mongolia, scheduled for 2026. This initiative aims to strengthen the shared Buddhist heritage between India and Mongolia and honor the deep connection to Buddhism’s ancient teachings. The journey of these relics signifies not just a religious event but also a celebration of the mutual respect for Buddhism’s profound influence transcending borders.
Arahant Sariputta and Arahant Mahamoggallana, as the two chief disciples of the Buddha, hold immense significance in Buddhist history. Born on the same day in neighboring villages in the Magadha region, these disciples are celebrated for their wisdom, insight, and doctrinal mastery. Their relics symbolize the transmission and preservation of the Buddha’s teachings, embodying the core principles of wisdom and realization essential for liberation in Buddhist traditions. Mongolia’s Buddhist identity, rooted in devotion and scholarship, will find profound meaning in the arrival of these relics, establishing a sacred connection to the Buddha Dhamma.
The historic enshrinement ceremony in Bangkok, held over two years ago, exemplifies the reverence accorded to the sacred Relics of Arahant Sariputta and Arahant Mahamoggallana alongside those of Gautama Buddha. This ceremony, organized under the ‘Ganga–Mekong Holy Buddha Relics’ initiative, marked a significant event where the relics of the Buddha and his chief disciples were enshrined together. Such ceremonies highlight the deep spiritual significance and reverence attached to these relics, emphasizing their importance in the Buddhist faith and heritage.
