Falta in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district gained national attention recently due to a political showdown resembling a movie clash between “Singham” and “Pushpa.” Ajay Pal Sharma, known for his strict policing as an IPS officer, took on the role of “Singham” as an Election Commission police observer in Falta. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan, likened to “Pushpa” from a Telugu film, emphasized resilience and grassroots appeal.
The Election Commission nullified the polling conducted on April 29 in Falta due to allegations of Electronic Voting Machine tampering and other irregularities. The Bharatiya Janata Party candidate emerged victorious over the Communist Party of India (Marxist) rival by a significant margin, with Trinamool Congress trailing behind the Indian National Congress.
In Falta, the BJP secured 71% of the votes, while the CPI(M) received 19%. Notably, the Trinamool Congress, which previously garnered 89% of the votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, only managed to secure 4% this time. The winning and runner-up candidates were the only ones who did not forfeit their deposits, marking a shift from previous elections in the constituency.
Abhishek Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress leader, has consistently maintained a significant lead in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency. However, the recent by-election in Falta witnessed a substantial victory margin for the BJP, challenging the established political dynamics in the region. The outcome of the election surprised many, deviating from earlier predictions and showcasing a changing political landscape.
