Nearly 30 families who lost relatives in the Air India Flight AI-171 crash have written to the Union Civil Aviation Minister requesting the inclusion of an experienced Boeing 787 pilot in the official accident investigation. They are seeking a clear timeline for the release of the final report and regular updates from investigators. The families emphasized the importance of a fair and transparent investigation into the crash that occurred on June 12 last year.
In their letter to the Minister of Civil Aviation, the families urged the Union government to ensure that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) establishes a formal communication channel with affected families. They also called for updates every 15 or 30 days and requested meetings where relatives can ask questions and receive answers. Additionally, they emphasized the need for an experienced commercial pilot with Boeing 787 flying and aircraft accident investigation experience to be included in the investigation team.
The families highlighted concerns over compensation-related documentation, alleging that Air India was pressuring next of kin to sign a release document that seemed to waive legal rights against not only the airline but also other associated companies. They expressed opposition to this condition, stating that families should not be compelled to give up their legal rights before the release of the Final Investigation Report and before all facts are known. The families stressed the importance of retaining the right to pursue legal claims where permitted.
