Four members of a family tragically lost their lives in a fire that erupted at their residence in Uluberia, located in West Bengal’s Howrah district. The incident occurred late on a cold Sunday night while the family members were asleep. The victims, identified as Duryodhan Dalui, Dudhkumar Dalui, Archana Dalui, and Shampa Dalui, a ninth-grade student, were all sleeping together in one room when the fire broke out. Despite the swift arrival of the fire brigade, none of the family members could be rescued.
Authorities suspect that the fire, which started around 12.30 a.m. in the Jhamtia Gram Panchayat area under Uluberia’s Joypur police station limits, may have been triggered by a short circuit. A thorough investigation into the incident is underway, with the police cordoning off the area around the house.
Local residents mentioned that most villagers had attended a social event in the vicinity the previous night for Ganga Puja. With the cold weather prompting everyone to shut their doors and windows for the night, the fire went unnoticed initially. By the time the blaze was noticed, it had already engulfed the house in flames. Despite efforts from residents to douse the fire, it took the intervention of the police and fire departments to bring it under control.
The bodies of the deceased were recovered from the house and sent for post-mortem examination. Dudhkumar, one of the victims, worked as an electrician in the area. The house, constructed with bamboo and mud walls and an asbestos sheet roof, quickly succumbed to the flames.
