Farmers in Hubballi, Karnataka are facing challenges as they lack gunny bags for chickpea procurement at support price centers. This has led to delays in purchases and left their produce vulnerable to damage. Despite protests, the government has only recently started procuring groundnuts at support prices, while logistical issues have hindered chickpea procurement.
Heaps of chickpeas can be seen outside procurement centers due to the shortage of sacks. Some farmers have resorted to using old burlap sacks from home to pack their produce, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. Official data reveals that out of 23,393 registered farmers, only 6,400 have managed to sell their chickpeas, with a total of 1,14,078 quintals procured until March 24.
Farmers criticize the authorities for delays and lack of storage arrangements, with a significant portion of the produce left outside procurement centers. The absence of gunny bags has halted the procurement process, leaving growers in distress. Concerns also arise over unseasonal rains posing a threat to the stored produce, potentially causing damage if not addressed promptly.
In Dharwad district, procurement disparities are evident across taluks, with varying purchase figures. While some areas like Navalgund have seen higher purchases, others like Hubli taluk have reported minimal procurement. Farmers express frustration over delays in being called to bring their produce and cooperative societies failing to lift filled bags, exacerbating financial pressures.
With most farmers cultivating crops through loans, delays in procurement have forced many to consider selling their produce at lower prices in the open market. Farmers are urging the government to provide sufficient gunny bags promptly and streamline procurement operations to alleviate further losses and hardships.
