Farmers in Tamil Nadu, especially from the Cauvery Delta region, are optimistic that the new TVK-led state government will uphold the tradition of presenting a dedicated Agriculture Budget. They are urging the government to engage directly with farmers and stakeholders to grasp their concerns and priorities before finalizing budget proposals. The previous administration’s consultative approach, involving various stakeholders like farmer associations, organic farming groups, and agricultural experts, ensured that farmers’ perspectives were considered in policy decisions.
Tamil Nadu set a precedent by introducing a distinct Agriculture Budget in the 2021–22 fiscal year. Prior to the budget presentation, the government conducted 28 consultative meetings across the state, gathering input from a wide spectrum of stakeholders. The budget focused on crop diversification, innovative farming practices, market access enhancement, organic farming promotion, nutrition initiatives, and technological advancements in agriculture. It also included provisions for subsidies and incentives to benefit farmers.
Farmers appreciated the opportunity provided by the consultative meetings to voice their concerns and demands openly. Selected representatives of farmer associations were also involved in discussions in Chennai before the budget proposals were finalized. As the new government gears up for its inaugural budget, farmers recommend organizing region-specific consultations to address local challenges and agricultural priorities effectively.
While acknowledging the significance of an exclusive Agriculture Budget, some farmer leaders emphasize that financial support reaching the state promptly is crucial to tackle core issues in the agricultural sector. They stress the importance of securing pending funds and fulfilling commitments related to procurement prices for crops like paddy and sugarcane to provide immediate relief and bolster the agricultural industry.
