A violent confrontation occurred between the police and a wanted criminal in Gopalganj district early on Saturday. The criminal, identified as Akash Singh, sustained gunshot wounds to both legs during the exchange of fire and was apprehended. Akash Singh, a resident of Barhaihata village, is known for his involvement in multiple criminal cases, including murder, attempted murder, robbery, extortion, and Arms Act violations.
Police records reveal that Akash Singh has a history of serious criminal offenses, with cases pending against him at various police stations in the region. One notable incident involves an alleged shooting at a former village Mukhiya and extortion attempts. Following specific intelligence inputs, a special police team successfully arrested Akash Singh and interrogated him at the Nagar police station.
During questioning, Akash Singh disclosed information about a hidden weapon near the Thawe-Banjari bypass. Subsequently, a police team accompanied him to the location to recover the weapon. However, Akash Singh attempted to flee by firing at the police team, resulting in officers firing back in self-defense. The criminal was wounded in both legs and taken into custody for medical treatment.
Authorities have recovered an illegal firearm from the scene and credited the Nagar Police Station, Thawe Police Station, and the District Intelligence Unit for their roles in the operation. Legal proceedings are underway, and efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals associated with the criminal network.
