FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed condolences for the tragic passing of Dominic Frimpong, a player from Berekum Chelsea FC in Ghana. Frimpong lost his life in an attack on the team bus while returning from a Ghana Premier League match against FC Samartex 1996. Infantino, on behalf of FIFA and the global football community, extended sympathies to Frimpong’s family, friends, and everyone at Berekum Chelsea FC.
The incident occurred when armed robbers attacked the Berekum Chelsea FC bus on its way back from Samreboi. The attackers, armed with guns and assault rifles, blocked the road, leading to a confrontation. Frimpong, along with other players and staff, sought refuge in nearby bushes. Despite receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital, Frimpong succumbed to his injuries.
Patrice Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), also offered heartfelt condolences for Frimpong’s untimely death. In an official letter to the president of the Ghana Football Association, Motsepe expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of the 20-year-old winger. Motsepe urged authorities to ensure that the perpetrators of the attack are brought to justice.
The Ghana Football Association, in collaboration with relevant authorities including the Ghana Police Service, is actively involved in ongoing investigations into the attack. Efforts are being made to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to apprehend those responsible for the tragic incident.
