Filmmaker Ari Aster has disclosed that he has penned a prequel to his acclaimed movie ‘Hereditary’. Despite this, he has not found the right timing to bring it to life. Aster mentioned during a Q&A session that he wrote the prequel but is uncertain about its direction as it’s not a sequel.
Aster’s ‘Hereditary’ marked his directorial debut and established him as a notable figure in the horror genre. The film, featuring Toni Collette and others, portrays the unraveling of the Graham family following the grandmother’s demise. Since ‘Hereditary’, Aster has directed films like ‘Midsommar’, ‘Beau Is Afraid’, and ‘Eddington’, all under A24.
Although Aster’s works are often categorized as “elevated horror” along with directors like Jordan Peele, he disapproves of this label. Aster expressed his dislike for the term, stating that it confines him within a specific genre, which some horror fans find objectionable.
Aster also shared the challenges he faced in financing ‘Hereditary’, revealing a difficult period involving a financier who caused immense stress. He described the situation as one of the darkest times in his life, where he felt compelled to protect the film from potential harm.
