Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented a new initiative during her budget speech in the Lok Sabha to enhance India’s involvement in critical minerals. The government plans to assist mineral-rich states like Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu in establishing specialized rare earth corridors. These corridors will cover all aspects of rare earth development, from mining to advanced manufacturing, aiming to reduce India’s reliance on imports in this sector.

This move follows the introduction of the rare earth permanent magnet scheme in November 2025 and signifies a strategic effort to strengthen India’s domestic capabilities in a field traditionally dominated by Chinese imports. The initiative is crucial as rare earths are essential in various sectors including electronics, renewable energy, electric vehicles, defense technologies, and advanced manufacturing.

The selected states, Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, are strategically chosen due to their abundant reserves of monazite and other beach sand minerals along their coastal regions. These resources are rich in rare earth elements, making them ideal for comprehensive development. The rare earth corridors will not only focus on extraction but also on high-value processing and rare earth magnet production, aiming to maximize economic and technological benefits from India’s own resources.

Industry experts view this initiative as a strategic response to global concerns regarding China’s dominance in rare earth production and exports. Aligned with the National Critical Minerals Mission, this initiative complements recent mining sector reforms focused on transparency and efficiency. It underscores India’s commitment to achieving self-sufficiency in critical minerals, a key aspect of its industrial and energy transition strategy.

The announcement is expected to attract investments, create job opportunities, and drive innovation in mineral technologies. It positions India as a key player in the global transition towards green energy and advanced technology ecosystems. While details on funding and timelines are yet to be disclosed, the rare earth corridors represent a significant step in the government’s agenda to boost manufacturing in strategic sectors.
