Police in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, have lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former mayor Junaid Azim Mattu for allegedly spreading misleading content online. The FIR was registered based on credible information about the dissemination of false and fabricated content on digital and social media platforms with the aim of causing fear and inciting unlawful activities. The police emphasized that such actions could lead to public unrest and disharmony.
The authorities stated that the circulated content appeared to be distorted and unverified, capable of triggering societal tensions. They highlighted the serious threat posed by deliberate misinformation to peace, security, and overall stability. Two FIRs, numbered 02/2026 and 03/2026, have been filed under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Cyber Police Station in Srinagar. Investigations into both cases are currently ongoing.
The police reiterated their commitment to upholding public peace and law and order. They advised citizens to verify information from official and credible sources before sharing it online to prevent the spread of unverified material that could disrupt communal harmony or public order. Legal actions will be taken as per the law against those found guilty of spreading misinformation.
Authorities also cautioned against uploading provocative content on social media that could lead to law and order issues. They identified several individuals involved in disseminating false and misleading information that could potentially disturb peace and tranquility in the region. Meanwhile, restrictions in the Kashmir Valley have been extended for the third consecutive day, with schools, colleges, and universities remaining closed until March 7, including the postponement of scheduled exams by the Kashmir University.
