The recent heavy rainfall in Bihar provided relief from the summer heat but also uncovered serious infrastructural deficiencies at the Sasaram Sadar Hospital in Rohtas district. Following an hour of torrential rain, the hospital premises were submerged, causing challenges for patients, attendants, doctors, and staff. Various sections of the hospital, including the trauma center, OPD building, TB center, general ward, blood bank, and Civil Surgeon’s office, were inundated due to inadequate drainage.
The accumulated rainwater transformed the hospital grounds into a pond-like state, with patients and attendants navigating knee-deep water to access healthcare services. Reports indicated that healthcare workers and doctors encountered significant obstacles moving between departments during the flooding. Local residents highlighted that waterlogging during the monsoon season was a recurring issue due to the absence of an effective drainage system.
Concerned residents emphasized that the hospital, serving a large population, faced annual challenges due to waterlogging, urging authorities to find a permanent solution. The hospital manager acknowledged that the waterlogging resulted from sudden heavy rainfall and assured ongoing efforts to drain the water. The incident underscored the need for long-term infrastructure improvements at the hospital to address the current difficulties faced by patients and medical staff.
