The Union Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, announced that the initial shipment of premium Areko cherries and Centrose plum from Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian and Pulwama districts to Singapore is set to benefit growers by offering improved prices and direct access to global markets. This move is expected to enhance India’s agricultural exports significantly. Goyal expressed his excitement, calling it a major achievement for orchardists in the region, facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

The export of these fruits to Singapore marks a significant milestone following the successful shipment of cherries and plums to Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the UAE. With Jammu and Kashmir’s favorable agro-climatic conditions, the region has become a prominent producer of high-quality temperate fruits known for their exceptional taste, texture, and shelf life. The recent consignment was meticulously handled, from harvesting to transportation, ensuring compliance with international food safety standards and maintaining freshness upon reaching Singapore.

APEDA’s efforts, in collaboration with Osum Food Solutions LLP and Fruit Master Agro Fresh Private Limited, Pulwama, have played a crucial role in organizing the flag-off ceremony for this export initiative. The move is anticipated to not only increase returns for growers by over 50% compared to traditional marketing channels but also promote export-oriented production, scientific farming practices, and improved post-harvest management. These developments aim to reduce wastage, enhance value realization, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for fruit-growing communities in the Union Territory.
