A month after making history by becoming the first woman to enter the Kerala Assembly on an Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) ticket, 32-year-old advocate Fathima Thahiliya is focused on developing her constituency, Perambra, into a model area emphasizing tourism, healthcare, and education.
Thahiliya’s election was significant as she broke barriers by wearing a traditional headscarf and representing a party known for its conservative stance, while also defeating the CPI-M to end their long hold over Perambra since 1980.
Thahiliya, an advocate at the Kozhikode District Court, has outlined plans to boost tourism, improve healthcare, and enhance education in Perambra, aiming to uplift the predominantly agrarian region.
Her performance in the Assembly has garnered praise for her well-prepared speeches, transcending traditional gender roles in politics and signaling a new era of leadership within the IUML.
