Five coal miners lost their lives in two different mining accidents in the Bolan and Duki coalfield regions of Balochistan, Pakistan. In Bolan, three miners perished due to being trapped underground as methane gas built up in a coal mine near Mach. Despite rescue efforts, they succumbed to suffocation from inhaling the gas. Simultaneously, in Duki, two miners died and another was injured when a coal-laden trolley struck them. This tragic incident adds to the concerning trend of mining accidents in Balochistan, as highlighted by recent reports of fatalities in the region.

An investigation has been initiated into the incidents, with authorities shutting down the affected coal mine for further examination. The unsafe working conditions and lack of safety measures in these mines have been underscored by the Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation’s report, which revealed a significant number of fatalities in Balochistan mines over the years. The report also sheds light on the dire situation faced by miners in Pakistan, including inadequate wages, absence of job security, and the absence of essential health and educational support for their families.

The hazardous working environment in these mines, coupled with the absence of proper safety equipment and long working hours for minimal pay, paints a grim picture of the challenges faced by coal miners in Pakistan. The need for improved safety regulations and better working conditions for miners in Balochistan is a pressing issue that requires immediate attention to prevent further tragedies in the future.
