At least ten people lost their lives due to flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch and Rajouri districts. The tragedy occurred in the Lower Murrah area of Bufliaz in Surankote tehsil of Poonch district. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with eight bodies recovered so far and others still missing.
Electric poles were uprooted, and mobile network services disrupted in flood-affected areas of Poonch district. Authorities, including police, civil administration, and locals, are actively involved in the affected areas. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the affected families.
In response to the situation, the Chief Minister is closely monitoring the relief efforts and has directed prompt assistance to the affected families. Weather warnings of continued heavy rainfall have prompted heightened vigilance across the region. Rivers in Rajouri, including Darhali, Khandli, Suktoh, and Jamola, have swelled, causing flooding in low-lying areas.
The Darhali River breached its flood protection wall near Bela Colony in Rajouri town, leading to the submergence of the new bus stand and vehicles. The flooding also impacted a slum settlement near Abdullah Bridge, displacing over 50 families. Authorities are actively responding to distress calls and assisting residents in evacuating to safer locations.
