Former army jawan mowed down by speeding SUV in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Aug 10 (IANS) A retired Army jawan was killed and three others injured after a speeding SUV ran over them in Hydershkote here on Monday.

The hit-and-run incident occurred near SMP School under the limits of Narsingi Police Station.

The Mahindra XUV, allegedly travelling on the wrong side, hit the army veteran, killing him on the spot. The speeding vehicle continued moving and hit other people, injuring three of them.

The retired jawan, who was riding a scooty, was tossed in the air and fell on the road when the SUV hit him. It subsequently hit other people, including two persons riding a Rapido two-wheeler.

According to eyewitnesses, five youths, who were travelling in the SUV, fled the scene, leaving behind the vehicle.

The youths were allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Police said they launched the investigation to identify and apprehend those involved.

The injured were admitted to a hospital, where the condition of one of them is stated to be critical.

Driving on the wrong side and in a rash manner at a high speed led to the fatal crash. Police said they were trying to ascertain if those in the vehicle involved were drunk.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle belonged to Babu Goud, a resident of the Shamshabad airport area.

Police have shifted the body of the former army jawan to the Osmania General Hospital for a postmortem examination.

In another accident in the city, a man died, and another was injured when a car hit a motorbike. The accident occurred in Kondapur. The deceased was identified as Srinivasulu, 50, of Wanaparthy district.

Meanwhile, a youth died, and another was injured when a motorbike they were riding hit a road divider in Jagtial district.

The CCTV visuals show the speeding bike losing control and hitting the divider. The injured is stated to be in critical condition.

In another accident in Mahabubabad district, a woman was killed on the Warangal-Khammam highway.

The accident occurred near Marepeda when a woman crossing the road was knocked down by a milk van. A truck coming from behind lost control and rammed into a roadside tree. The truck driver and cleaner were critically injured.

A man and his wife were injured in another accident in Hanamkonda district. According to police, a car rammed into a culvert while trying to avoid a two-wheeler. The couple travelling in the car were injured. They were on their way to Hanamkonda from Siddipet.

In another accident which occurred in Khammam district, three persons were injured in a collision between a car and a truck. The accident occurred in Wyra town of the district.

Police, with the help of locals, pulled out one of the injured trapped in the damaged car. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital.
