In a significant political move before the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, Jayanta Khaound, the former AGP Finance Secretary, switched to the Congress on Monday. Khaound officially joined the Congress at the party’s headquarters in New Delhi in the presence of key leaders, including AICC General Secretary Jitendra Singh Alwar and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi.
Gogoi welcomed Khaound into the party, highlighting that this move signifies growing discontent among the people of Assam towards Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership. He criticized the ruling BJP-led alliance, alleging that dedicated workers are being sidelined while those facing corruption charges are being favored.
The shift in Khaound’s allegiance is seen as part of a broader political realignment in Assam ahead of the upcoming elections. Meanwhile, Assam Congress In-charge Jitendra Singh accused the BJP of undermining regional political identities and attempting to sideline regional parties by forming alliances initially and then overshadowing them.
Singh pointed out similarities in the political landscape of Assam, where efforts are being made to weaken the AGP. He expressed optimism that the inclusion of leaders like Khaound would enhance the Congress’s organizational strength in the state and reinforce its commitment to safeguarding Assam’s cultural and political heritage.
Political parties in Assam are gearing up for the forthcoming Assembly elections, with realignments and preparations gaining momentum.
