Prashant Barman, the former BDO of Raiganj Block in West Bengal, accused in the abduction and murder case of gold merchant Swapan Kamilya, was granted bail by a district court. Barman’s arrest in New Town, Kolkata, occurred after he hit a two-wheeler rider while driving intoxicated. The incident led to a confrontation with locals, resulting in his detention by the police.
Barman’s arrest was a result of a coincidental and dramatic encounter with law enforcement. While driving under the influence, he got into an altercation after hitting a two-wheeler rider. Local residents recorded his behavior, leading to his detention by the police. Despite facing charges related to drunk driving and the abduction-murder case, Barman was granted bail due to a lack of necessary documents from investigating officers.
Barman, a former BDO and a close confidant of leaders from the Trinamool Congress, had been absconding since being accused of Kamilya’s murder. The case dates back to October last year when Kamilya’s body was found near a canal in Salt Lake. Barman had previously obtained anticipatory bail, which was later rejected by the High Court. Despite multiple court orders to surrender, Barman remained elusive until his recent arrest.
