A former BSNL technical officer, Ram Vinod Singh, has been convicted in a disproportionate assets case by a special CBI court in Ranchi. He has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 25 lakh. Failure to pay the fine within the specified period could lead to an additional one year of simple imprisonment.
The case, dating back to 2007, originated when the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch in Ranchi filed a case against Singh for allegedly amassing assets worth approximately Rs 34 lakh beyond his known income sources. The investigation revealed that Singh, during his tenure, misused his official position to acquire these assets.
During the trial, the CBI presented documentary evidence and witness testimonies to support their case against Singh. The court found him guilty under Sections 13(2) and 13(1)(e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and handed him a three-year jail term along with the fine.
CBI officials confirmed that their investigation uncovered movable and immovable assets belonging to Singh that were disproportionate to his lawful earnings, leading to his conviction.
