Former Chairperson of District Development Council Baramulla, Safina Baig, who is the wife of opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) co-founder Muzaffar Hussain Baig, has joined the National Conference (NC) at the party headquarters in Srinagar. Safina Baig’s move, accompanied by her supporters, took place in the presence of NC President Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Minister for Rural Development Javid Ahmad Dar, and other senior leaders.
This development is considered a significant boost for the National Conference in Baramulla district, where the party secured 6 out of 7 Assembly seats in the 2024 election. Muzaffar Hussain Baig, Safina’s husband and a key figure in the PDP’s formation, previously held the position of Deputy CM in the PDP-Congress coalition during Ghulam Nabi Azad’s leadership. He has been a prominent political figure in Baramulla and Kashmir, having won elections in both the Assembly and Lok Sabha.
Despite a period of reduced political activity, Muzaffar Hussain Baig, a Harvard Law School alumnus and Padma Bhushan recipient in 2020, remains influential in legal and political circles. His expertise has been valued nationally, having served as the Chief Spokesperson for the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party and as an Advocate General of J&K. Baig’s rumored association with Sajad Lone’s Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference following differences with Mehbooba Mufti post the Article 370 abrogation was denied by the Peoples Conference.
