Former champion Lakshya Sen showcased a strong defense and pace to defeat Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in the second round of the India Open 2026 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. Sen triumphed 21-19, 21-11, securing a spot in the quarterfinals. However, Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy faced setbacks in their matches.

In other matches, Srikanth lost to Christo Popov of France 21-14, 17-21, 21-17, while Prannoy was defeated by Loh Kean Yew of Singapore 18-21, 21-19, 21-14. The Indian challenge in the women’s section also ended as Han Yue of China defeated Malvika Bansod 21-18, 21-15.

Sen initially struggled against Nishimoto but staged a comeback by engaging in long rallies and showcasing brilliant defensive strokes. He secured the first game after trailing and displayed a more clinical performance in the second game, ultimately winning in 50 minutes. Sen is set to face Lin Chun-Yi of Chinese Taipei in the next round.

Sen mentioned that adjusting his pace and focusing on defense turned the first game in his favor. He emphasized the importance of not allowing his opponent to dictate the game in the second match, leading to his victory.

Srikanth and Prannoy also fought hard in their respective matches but could not secure wins. Srikanth displayed attacking prowess against Popov, while Prannoy saved game points but ultimately fell short against Loh Kean Yew. The day’s matches witnessed intense competition and strategic gameplay.
