Former Delhi High Court Judge S.N. Dhingra expressed concern over the recent protest by Indian Youth Congress (IYC) members at an AI summit, stating that the demonstration’s timing, location, and manner could have legal implications and affect national dignity. While acknowledging the right to protest in a democracy, Justice Dhingra highlighted that staging protests during significant international events could raise serious questions about the country’s image. He emphasized that disrupting business-focused forums like the AI summit, attended by global leaders and business figures, could impact investment climate and international cooperation.

Dhingra emphasized that while freedom of expression is crucial, dissent should not be perceived as hostile to national interests. He mentioned that criticism of the government is a democratic right, but actions that may harm national interest could face legal scrutiny. Stressing the importance of discipline at international gatherings, he noted that disorder at such events could influence India’s global reputation. Foreign delegates not only observe the government but also the behavior of opposition groups and citizens, shaping international perceptions of the country.
