Former district judge Giribala Singh, who retired in February 2023, returned to the Bhopal District Court under different circumstances, now as an accused in her daughter-in-law Twisha Sharma’s alleged dowry death case. Accompanied by her son Samarth Singh, she faced the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in court.
Upon the CBI convoy’s arrival at the court, a significant crowd gathered, including lawyers, litigants, and court staff, as the once-respected judicial officer faced investigation in a high-profile case. Samarth Singh was taken to Magistrate Shobhana Bhalawe’s courtroom first, followed by Giribala Singh under security escort.
Inside the courtroom, both Giribala Singh and Samarth Singh stood in the dock for over two hours during the proceedings. Despite the gravity of the situation, the 65-year-old former judge remained composed, engaging with her legal team and son throughout the hearing.
After arguments from both sides, the court granted the CBI a five-day custody of Giribala Singh and Samarth Singh for further interrogation. The case revolves around the death of Twisha Sharma, who died by suicide shortly after her marriage to Samarth Singh, with allegations of harassment and dowry-related cruelty leveled against him and Giribala Singh.
