Former England captain Nasser Hussain has criticized England’s performance in the Ashes series against Australia, stating that despite a major change in approach, the latest campaign has not been different from previous heavy defeats in Australia. Australia secured the Ashes with an 82-run victory over England in the third Test in Adelaide on Sunday. The hosts sealed the series win during the final day of the Adelaide contest, with Scott Boland taking the decisive wicket as England was bowled out for 352 in their second innings. Australia now leads 3-0 in the five-game Ashes series.
This series loss marks the first away defeat of the Bazball era after the appointments of Brendon McCullum as head coach and Ben Stokes as captain in 2022, following England’s 4-0 loss four years ago.
Speaking on the Ashes Daily podcast on Sky Sports Cricket after the third Test, Hussain acknowledged England’s attempt to adopt a different approach after previous failures in Australia. He appreciated the team’s forward planning, bold selections, and emphasis on pace and aggressive batting to challenge the Australian bowlers.
Hussain highlighted that England’s strategic shift was influenced by historical trends, as most touring sides have struggled in Australia. He pointed out that despite playing 17 Test matches in the country, Joe Root is yet to secure a victory there.
Expressing disappointment, Hussain noted that despite the significant rethink and unconventional selections, the outcome has mirrored past Ashes tours. He had hoped for a different result, especially against the current Australian team, but the overall performance suggests otherwise.
