Former Grand Slam champions and seasoned players navigated a rain-interrupted day of French Open qualifying on Tuesday in Paris. Notable names like Bianca Andreescu and Karolina Pliskova progressed to the next round. Andreescu, the former US Open champion ranked 160th globally, secured a 6-3, 6-2 win over French player Daphnee Mpetshi Perricard. She aims for her sixth main-draw appearance at Roland Garros and will face Slovakia’s Viktoria Hruncakova next.
Pliskova, a former world No. 1, staged a remarkable comeback after a tough start against South Korea’s Ku Yeon-woo. She rallied to win 0-6, 6-3, 6-1. The Czech veteran, seeded 20th, is striving for her 14th Roland Garros main draw in 15 seasons. Pliskova will challenge Spain’s Marina Bassols Ribera in the next round.
American player Ashlyn Krueger, the third seed, comfortably advanced by defeating French wild card Margaux Rouvroy 6-4, 6-3. Another American, Robin Montgomery, eliminated 31st seed Maddison Inglis in straight sets. Lulu Sun, a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist, overcame China’s Ma Ye-Xin in three sets to progress in the qualifiers.
However, some young talents faced disappointment. Czech player Laura Samson lost a tough match to Argentina’s Julia Riera, while US Open junior champion Jeline Vandromme fell to Japan’s Aoi Ito in straight sets. Serbian teenager Teodora Kostovic had a smoother outing, defeating Elizabeth Mandlik 6-2, 6-2.
The women’s qualifying draw also saw Sloane Stephens, Tamara Zidansek, Martina Trevisan, Irina-Camelia Begu, and Alina Korneeva advance on Monday. Despina Papamichail caused an upset by eliminating top seed Lanlana Tararudee. France’s Carole Monnet fought through a tense match to keep local hopes alive in Paris.
