Former Indian pacer Niranjana Nagarajan has expressed her support for Harmanpreet Kaur to retain her position as the T20I captain despite India’s recent exit from the Women’s T20 World Cup. She emphasized the need for power hitters in the middle-order rather than attributing the team’s performance solely to Harmanpreet’s captaincy.
The discussion on India’s T20I leadership intensified after the team failed to reach the semi-finals for the second consecutive time. As Harmanpreet approaches 39 years old, there are calls for a leadership change ahead of the 2028 Women’s T20 World Cup. However, Niranjana believes that Harmanpreet has been a consistent performer and deserves continued support.
Niranjana highlighted Harmanpreet’s contributions as a captain over the past 7-8 years, emphasizing her resilience and performance, particularly against strong teams like Australia. While acknowledging the selector’s role in decision-making, Niranjana stressed that the team has achieved historic results under Harmanpreet’s leadership, indicating that a change may not be necessary at this stage.
India’s performance in ODI and Test matches under Harmanpreet Kaur and coach Amol Muzumdar has been relatively stable. However, their challenges in T20Is have led to suggestions for improvements in the middle-order batting lineup to provide better support to Harmanpreet and alleviate pressure during crucial phases of the game.
