Former Indian Ambassador to Poland, Dr. Deepak Vohra, praised the India-US trade deal as a significant diplomatic success, emphasizing India’s patience and protection of key sectors during negotiations. Dr. Vohra highlighted that despite criticism from the American establishment, India showed restraint and resilience. He described India’s negotiation strategy as akin to “duck diplomacy,” remaining calm on the surface while working diligently behind the scenes.
Dr. Vohra drew parallels between US President Trump’s leadership style and that of Roman Emperor Caligula, noting India’s response of strategic engagement and restraint. He noted that India achieved its trade agreement objectives while safeguarding sensitive sectors like agriculture and dairy. Dr. Vohra humorously remarked that the deal signifies the beginning of a new phase, quoting a Hindi song lyric.
Regarding energy trade discussions, Dr. Vohra mentioned President Trump’s comments on India’s potential energy purchases from the US and Venezuela. He affirmed that India will prioritize national interests in energy decisions, continuing to buy oil from Russia due to competitive prices and the country’s reliable partnership. Dr. Vohra hailed the trade deal as a significant milestone in India’s global trade endeavors, labeling it the “father of all deals” in comparison to the European Union agreement.
