India’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Syed Akbaruddin, shared a pivotal moment when Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resolute decision altered India’s course at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Akbaruddin, speaking on a YouTube channel, discussed India’s legal battle in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case. Despite initial doubts, PM Modi’s firm resolve led India to pursue the matter at the ICJ.
Akbaruddin highlighted the diplomatic progress that preceded India’s formal announcement at the ICJ. He recounted a significant vote received even before the official candidacy declaration, emphasizing the proactive support garnered due to discussions between PM Modi and the Uzbek President. This early success signaled the seriousness of the situation and the need for India to push forward in the case.
Kulbhushan Jadhav, an Indian national facing the death penalty in Pakistan on charges of espionage and sabotage, has been a point of contention between the two countries. India refutes the allegations, asserting that Jadhav was abducted from Iran. The ICJ intervened following India’s appeal, directing Pakistan to review Jadhav’s trial and conviction processes and provide India with consular access. Islamabad later granted consular access to Jadhav, facilitating a meeting between Indian officials and Jadhav in Pakistan.
