Former Intelligence Bureau Special Director, Anurag Kumar, has been named as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police as per a government notification. An IPS officer of the 1994 AGMUT cadre, Kumar takes over from Satish Golcha, who assumed the role last year.
Despite Golcha’s tenure originally set to extend until April 2027, the government has instructed him to report to the Delhi LG office. Anurag Kumar’s appointment follows his transfer from the Intelligence Bureau back to his parent AGMUT cadre by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
An official order confirmed Kumar’s appointment, highlighting his 32 years of experience in policing, administration, and intelligence operations. With a background in internal security and law enforcement, Kumar’s expertise is seen as crucial for managing one of the nation’s most challenging policing roles.
Recognized for his service with prestigious honors, including the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016, Kumar brings a wealth of experience to his new position. Tasked with overseeing security and law enforcement in Delhi, he faces the responsibility of safeguarding key constitutional and administrative institutions in the national capital.
