Former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan criticized the Congress-led UDF government for allegedly aiding in the “saffronisation” of Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam. Vijayan, a CPI(M) leader, raised concerns about the Governor’s office involvement in these efforts, urging secular and democratic forces to oppose the influence of Sangh Parivar in the state’s higher education sector.
Vijayan highlighted attempts by the UDF government to interfere with the functioning of MG University since assuming power. He expressed disappointment over the government’s silence and failure to address the issue, emphasizing the importance of upholding Kerala’s secular values in the face of such challenges.
The former Chief Minister pointed out the appointment of a temporary Vice-Chancellor at MG University from a BJP-linked teachers’ organization as a concerning development. He criticized the government for allegedly allowing the university to come under the influence of Sangh Parivar by neglecting established procedures and norms.
Vijayan underscored the significance of safeguarding the Constitution and university laws, calling on the Chief Minister to clarify the government’s stance on the matter. He accused the UDF government of enabling the Sangh Parivar’s agenda of controlling universities, contrasting it with the resistance shown by the previous LDF administration.
