Former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of Kerala has spoken out for the first time following the Left Democratic Front’s significant loss in the recent elections. Vijayan acknowledged the unexpected defeat, defended his government’s decade-long performance, and assured a political resurgence. He emphasized the need for serious reflection within the Left camp in light of the election outcome.
In a statement as a CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, Vijayan expressed surprise at the election verdict, which favored the Congress-led UDF. Despite losing the anticipated third consecutive victory, Vijayan highlighted the substantial support the LDF received from a significant portion of the electorate, instilling confidence for future political engagements. He viewed the verdict not as a conclusion but as a fresh start for sustained political involvement.
Vijayan’s statement carries significant weight amidst mounting criticism against him and state secretary M. V. Govindan following the Left’s drastic reduction to 35 seats in the 140-member Assembly. Having been a prominent figure in Kerala’s CPI(M) for nearly three decades, Vijayan staunchly defended the Left government’s accomplishments over the past ten years, citing impactful welfare programs and development initiatives that transformed Kerala’s society.
Acknowledging the need for corrective actions, Vijayan pledged that the LDF would operate as a responsible opposition, endorsing pro-people policies of the incoming government while vehemently opposing decisions deemed detrimental to the public. He also raised concerns about misinformation and propaganda influencing the election results, attributing the outcome partly to misleading narratives perpetuated by certain media outlets and corporate-driven fake news campaigns.
Vijayan recognized the growing discontent and internal discord, committing to an open and democratic review of the electoral setback. He assured that necessary adjustments would be implemented, with a commitment to address concerns voiced by both the public and party members. Additionally, Vijayan underscored the BJP’s success in securing three seats as a cautionary signal, reaffirming the LDF’s commitment to safeguarding Kerala’s secular ethos.
