Former Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim resigned from his position after seeking permission from Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee. This decision followed an administrative meeting at the state secretariat Nabanna, where Hakim was present along with other Trinamool MLAs. Despite opposition from party members, Hakim expressed his desire to resign with dignity, leading to Mamata eventually accepting his resignation.
Firhad Hakim, who previously served as the urban development minister, became the Mayor of Kolkata in 2018, making history as the first Muslim mayor of the city. After holding the mayor’s office for nearly eight years, Hakim abruptly stepped down from his position. The resignation of Tarak Singh, the mayor-in-council, further highlighted internal tensions within the Trinamool Congress, with Singh opting not to contest elections on the party’s symbol.
In a significant turn of events, expelled Trinamool MLA Ritabrata Banerjee assumed the role of Leader of the Opposition with the backing of 58 MLAs. Following this development, the party leadership decided to dissolve all state-level committees, sparking speculation about potential internal restructuring efforts. Amid concerns of party fragmentation post-election setbacks, Mamata Banerjee’s strategic moves aim to consolidate support across various organizational segments within the Trinamool Congress.
