Former Morocco winger Zakaria Aboukhlal has cautioned the Atlas Lions about the need to balance defensive strength with offensive courage when facing France in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals. The upcoming match will be the first World Cup encounter between the two nations since France’s victory over Morocco in the 2022 tournament semi-finals in Qatar, halting the Atlas Lions’ historic run as the first African and Arab nation to reach that stage.
Aboukhlal, who played as a substitute in the previous semi-final, emphasized France’s threat due to their ability to capitalize on opponents’ mistakes. He recalled the intensity of the game and highlighted France’s proficiency in punishing even minor errors, citing their speed, experience, and individual match-winning capabilities.
The Torino winger stressed that Morocco’s strategy should not solely focus on containing Kylian Mbappé but also on being proactive with the ball. He pointed out that France boasts quality players throughout their squad, necessitating a collective defensive effort from Morocco while also seeking opportunities to challenge France offensively.
Despite not being part of Morocco’s 2026 World Cup squad, Aboukhlal commended the team’s growth and maturity since their breakthrough performance in Qatar. He praised the current squad’s composure, confidence, and unity, noting their readiness to face top-level competition without being daunted by the stage.
Aboukhlal also lauded the leadership within the team following the retirement of former captain Romain Saiss, singling out goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, defender Noussair Mazraoui, and captain Achraf Hakimi as influential figures. He highlighted the emergence of multiple leaders within the squad, emphasizing their understanding of representing Morocco on the global stage.
While acknowledging France’s strength, Aboukhlal expressed belief that a successful World Cup campaign would solidify Morocco’s status among football’s elite. He emphasized the significance of demonstrating consistency and competitiveness at the highest level, showcasing Morocco’s ability to sustain their progress and compete with the best teams on a consistent basis.
