Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull has emphasized the need for accountability within the top management of the Mumbai Indians following their recent six-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026. Despite Mumbai’s competitive score of 243/5, featuring a record-breaking century by Ryan Rickelton, the team’s performance fell short as SRH successfully chased the target, led by Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Heinrich Klaasen. This defeat has underscored Mumbai’s struggle with consistency this season, with only two wins from eight matches, raising concerns about deeper structural issues within the franchise.
Doull pointed out that Mumbai’s leadership decisions, including the controversial move of replacing Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as captain, have not yielded the desired results. The former cricketer highlighted the complexity of managing a dressing room with multiple senior players and leaders, suggesting that this dynamic has made it challenging for the current captain to establish authority. Despite Mumbai’s history of success with five IPL titles, the team has faced performance fluctuations over the past few seasons, with the current season failing to gain momentum.
The decline in Mumbai’s performance, according to Doull, cannot be solely attributed to the players or the captain. He stressed the importance of holding the franchise’s leadership accountable for the decisions that have impacted the team’s current state. Doull called for ownership management to take responsibility for the team’s performance over the past three years, emphasizing that the franchise must address the issues that have led to their current situation.
Mumbai is now preparing to face Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, following a previous defeat to CSK earlier in the season. The upcoming match presents a crucial opportunity for Mumbai to bounce back and improve their standing in the IPL.
