Former Rajasthan Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot, expressed strong disapproval of the recent directive by the Allahabad High Court, instructing an FIR and investigation into allegations concerning Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi’s purported British citizenship. Gehlot criticized the court’s decision as surprising, stating that it unnecessarily burdens the executive branch. He highlighted that similar pleas had been rejected by courts previously, including the Supreme Court in 2019 and the Allahabad High Court in July 2025, making the current ruling perplexing.
Gehlot condemned the call for a CBI inquiry or FIR regarding unfounded claims of British citizenship against Rahul Gandhi, deeming it astonishing and an undue imposition on the executive. He underscored that previous legal avenues had already addressed comparable petitions, rendering the current directive unexpected. In a show of solidarity with LoP Gandhi, Gehlot referenced the sacrifices made by the Nehru-Gandhi family for the nation’s unity, emphasizing the family’s contributions to India’s freedom struggle.
The statement from Gehlot comes following the Allahabad High Court’s order for the registration of an FIR related to allegations of dual citizenship against Rahul Gandhi, permitting the state government or a central agency to investigate the matter. The court mandated the initiation of a probe and filing of an FIR against Gandhi based on a petition by a BJP worker alleging his British citizenship. The court specified that the issue warranted investigation, leaving the choice of conducting the probe to the UP government or a central agency.
