Graeme Smith, the former South Africa captain and SA20 commissioner, commended Tristan Stubbs for his match-winning 63 not out in the recent SA20 final, boosting his confidence for the upcoming T20 World Cup jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Stubbs, who initially struggled in the tournament and was left out of South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad, was later called back due to Donovan Ferreira’s injury. This innings marked Stubbs’ first half-century in T20 format in 51 innings since August 2024.
Smith praised Stubbs for his performance, highlighting his ability to rebuild the innings and take charge, expressing confidence that the victory would enhance Stubbs’ self-assurance. The tournament also showcased breakout performances, with Nqobani Mokoena from Paarl Royals standing out for his impressive bowling figures of 13 wickets in 10 games at an economy rate of 9.62. Smith emphasized the importance of developing talent pools like Mokoena to unearth hidden gems in cricket.
Reflecting on emerging talents, Smith acknowledged Cricket South Africa’s role in nurturing grassroots talent. He emphasized the thrill of discovering unknown players like Mokoena and the growth of individuals such as Stubbs, Breetzke, and Brevis over the years. Mokoena, known for his pace and variations, impressed with his performance and character, stepping up in challenging situations and making a mark on the global stage.
