Former Trinamool Congress MLA Sabyasachi Dutta, who also served as the chairman of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation in West Bengal, was arrested early Tuesday morning. Dutta faces allegations of corruption, extortion, and intimidation of residents in his area. The arrest followed a complaint by a local businessman from Salt Lake, leading to a raid on Dutta’s residence in Rajarhat.
Sources revealed that Dutta, currently a councillor in Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, has faced previous complaints related to corrupt practices and hooliganism. The police conducted the raid at Dutta’s residence in Raigachi after midnight, culminating in his arrest. Dutta, a former two-term MLA, had switched from Trinamool Congress to BJP before the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Despite contesting as a BJP candidate in 2021 and later rejoining Trinamool Congress post-elections, Dutta faced defeat in the Barasat Assembly constituency. Following his arrest, Dutta will undergo a medical examination before being presented in a North 24 Parganas district court. The prosecution is expected to request his judicial custody.
