Former Trinamool Congress MLA Aditi Munshi and her husband Debraj Chakraborty have approached the Calcutta High Court for anticipatory bail, fearing arrest on charges of possessing disproportionate assets. Debraj Chakraborty, a Trinamool councillor in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, was recently detained for questioning in a 2021 post-poll violence case. Their lawyer has requested anticipatory bail from the High Court, with the case scheduled for a hearing on Friday.
Following the change in government in the state, several Trinamool leaders have been arrested on corruption allegations. Aditi and Debraj are concerned about potential arrest in connection with disproportionate assets. Aditi Munshi, a popular devotional singer, was fielded by Trinamool Congress in the 2021 Assembly polls, defeating the BJP candidate by around 25,000 votes to become an MLA. Her husband, Debraj, played a significant role in her victory, as many have pointed out.
Despite being nominated again by Trinamool for the recent Assembly elections, Aditi lost to the BJP candidate. Debraj, considered Aditi’s key support during the campaign, has faced scrutiny, with a person named Amit Chakraborty, claimed to be his close associate, being arrested recently. Police sources mention an incident where attempts were made to obstruct the BJP’s victory procession on the day of the Assembly vote counting, leading to arrests of individuals linked to Debraj Chakraborty.
