Former Union Minister and four-time Lok Sabha member Rajen Gohain has resigned from the regional party Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) citing personal reasons and signaling his disinterest in active politics. In his resignation letter to AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Gohain announced his immediate resignation from the party’s primary membership and all associated responsibilities.
Expressing gratitude towards the party leadership, workers, and supporters for their cooperation during his tenure with AJP, Gohain clarified that his decision to step down was driven by personal reasons and affirmed that he has no intentions of returning to active politics. Gohain, a significant political figure from central Assam, had previously been associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for several decades before joining AJP.
Representing the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency four times as a BJP candidate, Gohain played a crucial role in the party’s growth in Assam. He also served as the Union Minister of State for Railways during the first term of the Narendra Modi-led government. However, ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, his relationship with the BJP leadership soured, leading to his departure and subsequent involvement with AJP.
