Reliable electricity supply is crucial for dignity, livelihoods, and equitable development, stressed former Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) Chairman Suresh Kumar Agarwal. Speaking at a roundtable event, he highlighted the need for structural reforms to enhance power supply quality in rural areas. Despite India’s progress in electricity access expansion, ensuring reliable and quality power supply, especially in rural regions, remains a significant challenge.
Agarwal emphasized that electricity supply goes beyond just lighting and fans; it is intertwined with dignity, honor, and livelihood. While past reforms have boosted electricity access, challenges like reliability and service quality persist, particularly in rural areas. Addressing issues such as network constraints, staffing shortages, distribution planning, and effective monitoring of rural feeders is crucial for enhancing service quality and ensuring fair electricity access.
At a roundtable organized by APCO and Chintan Research Foundation (CRF), APCO Associate Director Vipin Chanddra highlighted the importance of discussions focused on strengthening the power distribution system. Dr. Debajit Palit, Centre Head of the Centre for Climate Change and Energy Transition at CRF, emphasized the need for future electricity sector reforms in India to prioritize reliability, quality, and consumer-centric services over mere access. He pointed out that as renewable energy gains prominence, the distribution segment plays a vital role in bridging policy and consumers.
India’s electricity sector, according to Palit, is at a critical juncture where reforms should pivot towards ensuring reliability, quality, and consumer-centric services. With Uttar Pradesh witnessing a surge in power demand, rapid industrialization, the PM Surya Ghar initiative, and persistent rural-urban gaps, there is a significant opportunity for advancing equitable and reliable electricity supply through structural reforms. During the event, a policy brief titled “Bridging the Rural-Urban Divide in Reliable and Quality Power Supply: A Path to Equitable Development” was unveiled by the keynote speaker and panelists.
